FUNAKI RE-SIGNS THROUGH 2028

Dynamic halfback Taufa Funaki has re-signed with the Blues through to the end of the 2028 DHL Super Rugby Pacific season.

A proud East Auckland product and Sacred Heart College graduate, Funaki has become one a consistent performer since making his Blues debut in 2022.

After progressing through the Auckland rugby system and representing the New Zealand Under 20s, the 25-year-old is known for his speed around the breakdown and instinctive attacking game.

Funaki enjoyed a breakout 2024 campaign, scoring five tries in 13 appearances as the Blues claimed the Super Rugby Pacific title.

Funaki, who has now played 42 games in blue, said he was excited to re-sign.

“I grew up in Auckland dreaming of wearing the Blues jersey, so to be able to continue that journey and keep representing the 09 is something I’m grateful for,” he said.

“The support from our fans has been unreal since I debuted. Running out at Eden Park in front of them is something I never take for granted, and I’m excited about what our new group can do over the next few years.”

Blues GM Rugby Murray Williams said securing Funaki was an important signing for the club.

“Taufa has developed into a well-respected leader among his peers and we’re pleased he’ll remain with us for another two seasons,” Williams said.

“We’ve seen huge growth in Taufa over the past few seasons and we’re excited about where his game can go. Retaining high quality local talent is a key part of our strategy, and Taufa is someone we believe will play a significant role in the future of the Blues.”
