Thompson hails from Hamilton and is a loose forward who can do a job at lock. He made his debut for Waikato in 2019 and also represented New Zealand at Under-20s level in the same year. In 2023 he made the move north to play his Bunnings NPC rugby at Counties Manukau.

Thompson has been a member of the Chiefs set-up for several seasons without making his Super Rugby debut and joins the Blues in a hotly contested area of the park. He will be looking to push for game time with the fellow loose forwards in the squad.
