TORIAN BARNES SIGNED UNTIL END OF 2028

The Blues have secured one of Super Rugby’s most exciting emerging forwards, with Torian Barnes signed through to the end of the 2028 Super Rugby Pacific season.

Barnes’ new deal follows a breakthrough season so far in which the 22-year-old has impressed coaches and teammates, earning minutes from the club’s Wider Training Group.

The athletic loose forward has seized his opportunities in 2026, showcasing his work rate, physicality and breakdown presence in a competitive Blues back row.

Barnes marked his early impact in style with his first Super Rugby try in the Blues’ win over the Western Force, highlighting the energy he brings around the park.

Originally from Christchurch, Barnes played his school rugby at St Andrew’s College and was selected for New Zealand Schools rugby union team before progressing through the Crusaders academy system.

He later represented Canterbury rugby union team in the National Provincial Championship, building a reputation as a dynamic loose forward capable of playing both flanker and No.8.

Standing 1.95m tall, Barnes has continued to develop rapidly since arriving in Auckland, earning his Blues debut in Round 1 against the Chiefs.

Barnes said extending his time with the club was an easy decision.

“It’s been a great experience coming into this environment and learning from the players and coaches here. The Blues have backed me from the Wider Training Group and given me the chance to prove myself,” he said.

“Pulling on the Blues jersey and running out has been something really special, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep building my game here. I’m looking forward to continuing to contribute to the team over the next few seasons.”

Blues GM Rugby Murray Williams said Barnes had earned his contract through his commitment and rapid development within the programme.

“Torian is exactly the type of young player we want to invest in. He came into our Wider Training Group with a strong work ethic and has taken every opportunity that has come his way this season.

“What has impressed us most is his hunger to improve and the physical edge he brings to the contest. He’s a player with enormous potential and we’re excited to see how he continues to grow in a Blues jersey over the next few years.”
